Breaking News Journalism: My Favorite

To elaborate on what I discussed yesterday, the Aventura Mall incident is apparently a big thing over at The Miami Herald.

I got the print contribution in the Local & State section of the paper, and the Herald also had another piece on security concerns being planned this week. You can read that article here.

On Sunday, to finish up my weekend, I did some more journalism, which shouldn't be a surprise.

I spent most of the afternoon gathering information for the print story of the Aventura Mall scene. I have to say that most people I talked to were rude, but with that kind of news I should expect nothing less.

I am working on a couple of other stories involving all the circulating news. From the mosque in New York to Facebook places, it is definitely a busy news season. Things like what happened in Aventura this weekend rarely happens, if ever.

If anything, hopefully some good will come of that situation. Stay tuned, I have plenty to news to report on in the future.

Breaking News, Stories, Teenlink and More!

What a busy weekend.

Starting at 10am on Saturday, I made my way over to the NSU Campus in Davie for the Teenlink Reorientation(new word I learned) meeting. I finally got my Teenlink shirt! The meeting also included some refreshments and everything was informative and well thought out.

I am still the only Miami-Dade County student who works for Teenlink, something that I am proud of.

Saturday night proved to be much more exciting, using Social Media to help contribute to a fight that broke out at Aventura Mall. That story can be read here and updated here.

I have to say covering breaking news is my favorite thing in journalism, so far. I still have plenty to learn and experience so that may change later on.

I am working on a couple stories leading into next week, things sure have been busy recently. Looking forward to Labor Day weekend, although I'll probably end up doing Labor on those days anyway!

Well, it is back to school work this week, much less exciting than journalism but it has to be done nonetheless.

Stay tuned!

"I've known it all my life..I made it." Week 1 of School and more

School started this week. A pretty dull first sentence I know.

I have to say being a senior in high school is great, I have a light schedule with my hardest class being my strongest subject(AP English). I love the ability to just be comfortable in a familiar environment. I am getting sick of certain trends though, but you can't have it all.

As for journalism, you didn't expect me to stop, did you?

Another weekend beat with the Herald was published today. I nailed a job interview on Tuesday, so I officially can't do any more journalism related activities unless I want to "burnout," which I don't think I will ever reach but you never know.

As for the multimedia club, that was approved officially today. Between taking pictures, preparing interview questions, and scheduling interviews, I have to say getting permission to take a photo is the most time consuming thing. If you're writing a story that promotes a business, why wouldn't you want the picture taken? That is beyond me.

Anyway, tomorrow is finally Friday, looking forward to the weekend and more so Labor Day weekend next week. Click the two highlighted words in this sentence to read some more recent work from me.

Stay tuned!

And...it begins.(School, More Work, New Goals)

Senior year of high school...applying for colleges...working for newspapers...starting a multimedia club.

This will be a busy nine months for me, but I am ready. I was talking to a colleague of mine today, Steve Johnson, and he recommended a Nikon D3100, an all-in-one DSLR that does audio, video, and of course photo. For $700, it is costly, but a necessary investment into becoming a complete journalist.

I hope to start off producing a few community pieces, but as I grow as a journalist and get better with video editing(Hopefully with a Mac!), I will look to expand into producing more in-depth multimedia pieces.

Not only do I have that covered, but I also have a multimedia club I am starting within my school, that integrates all aspects of communication.

Things sure are getting busier, most of my next week is planned.

Tuesday- Job Interview
Wednesday- Movie Screening to review
Saturday- Teenlink Orientation

My planned fall season is certainly busy, but as you expected, I love every minute of it.

Twitter and more work!

Well as the final weekend of summer is upon us, I have had quite a ride wild during these last few months.

After a lengthy meeting with my Herald editor on Friday, I still have more work to do and I love every minute of it.

I just started a Twitter about...20 minutes ago as well. I like it so far and I know it will help me grow and gain even more exposure as a journalist.

I am currently working on finishing The Invisible Man for AP English and on a couple stories for various publications.

So follow me on Twitter @Anthony_Cave and stay tuned!

Summer seems like it's been 'Gone In 60 Seconds'

With less than a week left, summer is reaching it's end.

I've had experiences I will never forget, and met many great people. The highlights include the Lebron James announcement at Montage 2010 and the many late nights spent doing stories for newspapers.

Tonight is no exception after covering the Gatorade Free Flow Tour at the Miami Skate Park in Doral today for Teenlink South Florida.

My story is due tomorrow afternoon and I also have another story to write for my current job at Crusty Europe in Aventura. I love it though and by "it" I mean the whole journalism experience.

I could write stories all night if I wanted to and I love to take on numerous assignments at once, it is just more satisfaction when I get it all done ahead of schedule.

Of course, I couldn't have gotten here without the help of others. From professionals to friends, I owe it all to them for all the journalism skills I've learned. I am truly grateful to everyone, first and foremost the one above.

My third story with The Miami Herald will be published tomorrow and I am working on a couple other assignments as well.

Looking forward to the last week to summer, I still have plenty to do and I love every minute of it.

Working hard and hardly doing anything else!

Between reading The Invisible Man and working on four(that's right, four!) stories for publications, free time is few and far between.

When school begins in a little under two weeks, it'll be more of the same. Editors on newspaper and yearbook as well as working on a couple of other projects both in and outside of school. Since the last few weeks of school in June I've been kicking into overdrive anyway, so I don't plan on slowing down anytime soon.

Anyway, here is another byline of mine, a review on "The Other Guys" for Teenlink South Florida.

I have much more to learn and much more to share as well. I learn so much on a daily basis that I need to teach others.

Stay tuned for the in-depth stories I am working on.

Work, Work, Work!

After many long emails and asking more than a handful of interview questions to everyone from FMX riders to Miami-Dade officials, the work continues.

I made progress today on plans to start a Multimedia Club within my school, something I am looking forward to when school begins. The multimedia aspect of journalism has hit me full throttle, and I want to teach others how to become involved in this ever-changing industry.

I am also working on three stories at the moment, one is never enough for me. I feel the rush of journalism when it's 10pm and I have 3 stories and a set of questions to write, that's when I know where I want to be. The satisfaction of finishing something at a undisclosed morning hour is a great feeling.

Anyway, it will be more of the same tomorrow, but I can sense I am getting stronger with certain skills.

The wonderful world of bylines!

I've been just as busy as I was when this summer began and this week has marked some major accomplishments for me.

I started working for Crusty Europe, which sponsors all the top FMX riders around the world. My first day of work was on Wednesday, as I interviewed Robbie Maddison(yes the New Years Eve guy pictured to the right). It was a great experience talking to him and I am currently working on writing his story for http://www.crustyeurope.com

I got my first byline on that website on Wednesday but I'm looking forward to the readers I get on the story with Robbie.

Backtracking to Monday, I got my first Miami Herald story published! If that's not enough, my 2nd Miami Herald story just got published yesterday and I am working on a 3rd as we speak. The link to the story is here.

Anyway, as the summer comes to a close I'd really just like to say thanks to people who have been following my work. The rate I'm going at I will have a byline everyday this week, as my "The Other Guys" movie review is going up online either today or tomorrow(movie was excellent by the way).

I also took a small break and watched "Brooklyn's Finest," which was surprisingly good. It is back to work tomorrow then a Montage Reunion BBQ on Saturday.

Stay tuned!

Vacation is all I ever needed!

I finally took a vacation!

That is the reasoning behind me not posting anything for over a week. To recap, the UM Luncheon was a little sad, but there is a reunion BBQ this Saturday that I am attending. I wasn't happy that I missed two other Montage related parties on Friday and Saturday, but this upcoming Saturday I will definitely be there.

My cruise on the Celebrity Solstice was a great experience, the ship is so modern and definitely appeals to everyone from ages 6 to 66. The food was stellar minus a few mishaps in the Thai department.

Tomorrow starts my busy work week..again. I love going nonstop as a journalist as I have a 10am meeting to start a 6 week internship with a international sports company followed by a 4pm meeting at the Miami Herald. Tuesday is more of the same, as I will be writing a review on "The Other Guys."

My journalism summer continues, so stay tuned!
